I have wondered that too.

I've seen the same thing, given the RAK/RAL ratio in my garage ~8^O. I
always wrote it off to RAK receivers not being that desireable so left in
warehouses etc while the RAL could be Ham CW radios that were used then
disgarded. Surely, the '50s conversion manuals were very negative on both
compared to what regen enthusiasts know now. That said...I like
RAK/RAL...may not be 'Collins' etc but still fun.
