One theory goes first U2s had KWM-1s & were on SSB.  Hence the 
rarely-seen 28V p-s (516F3?)

20/20 hindsight!

Some 10 or 15 years ago I was browsing the back dark shelves at one of the local country surplus emporiums.  I spotted a familiar looking box with them big transistors down both sides back in the corner of one shelf, but left it, because: A.  I didn't have a KWM-1, and B. IT WAS 28 VOLTS ANYWAY.  Geeez!
