[Milsurplus] Vibrator question

Hi all,

Have a thought. I have a set with vibrator psu. Of course vib is a bit duff, working but high arcing on the contacts even after cleaning. Voltage going up and down.  On an external ac psu the set works fine.

Options; 
1     replace with internal mains psu
2     find another vibrator
3     use 12v ac and simply ignore vib and feed 12v ac to vib transformer (fit diodes to relays of course)

cons:
option 1 total destruction of set origonality
          2 same problems persists 
          3 will it work ? will vib transformer designed for square wave work with sine wave ac?

so, has anyone ever thought of running such a vib psu off its low voltage ac.
