First: Decontamination - DON'T! YOU aren't set up for this AT ALL!

Second: Radiation - IF it is Radium 226, it is an Alpha emitter. Alpha particles CANNOT penetrate through paper, unbroken skin, and most anything. It becomes a hazard IF inhaled, ingested, or gains entrance through broken skin.

You CAN eliminate the hazard by using a plastic heat shrinkable wrap. It contains it. Try you local hobby shop for the transparent heat shrink tubing used to make R/C battery packs. This will take care of the knob.

For the scale, cover it with "Saran Wrap" or something equivalent that you can place over the scale and still see it.

For Lord's sake, don't mess with the material!

I TOO was in the nuclear industry in the past. Pure Plutonium can be picked up with a paper coffee cup, and covered with another one placed into the top of the first. It can no longer be detected.

To have detected the material with a detection device, you must have opened the alpha window. If not, then it is something OTHER than an Alpha emitter. If that is the case, then DISTANCE is the key. Beta particles WON'T penetrate plastic eyeglass lenses, era MUCH less damaging than Alpha. If Gamma particles, you WON'T shield yourself from it! Takes layers of lead, polyethylene, and other items in LAYERS.

I doubt that the radio is a GREAT hazard.

DON'T get officials involved! You'll regret it IMMENSELY!
