I finally went to Tut's tomb this AM with a Geiger counter for a look
at the MAW-1 (by Hoffman) vhf xcvr,

Counter a good one, a Victoreen CDV700-6A. Catch this

Beta & Gamma ionizing radiation 50 mr/hr. FIFTY
         " " " 5 mr/hr

Background beta/gamma " .02 mr/hr
     " " unmeasurable

No wonder there's no roaches in that garage

It's the "channel selector" & volume knob scales that're hot. Think
I'll remove knobs & plate & try for a decontamination somehow, someway.
A minute of me @ a time.

I'm with last week's consensus that getting officials involved'd be
like alerting ghostbusters. They might turn the place into a
superfund site.

Then perhaps the property's worth more as a superfund site.

= = = = = = = = How was MAW-1 used? = = = = = = = = =

Korea. Gyrene's called in bombardment from their carrier-baased ADs from
hidden spots near target

Know a Mosquito (AT6) spotter that called in F84s & F86s from the air.
Sez marine deal much better since ADs cud orbit target dropping bits
& pieces 'til they were zeroed in. Then ker-whumpppp. AF jets sent in
solo jet leading 4 others.... Ah, don't need to spin this yarn

MAW-1 xcvr probably 1st made in '45. Old style handset jacks - not
PRC-8 twist-ons. Huge controls that'd do fine w. mittens. Inside
there's a huge channel change turret. Really major league 100-156
am xcvr & probably 1st.
