That worked both ways.  A friend was on U.S. navy ships at the end of the 
war, and they were told not to smoke on deck at night because subs might 
find the ship with IR detectors.  The Germans were indeed working on IR, but 
most assuredly it was not on any subs.  Once again, if they were close 
enough for IR detection, they would most certainly hear them very well with 
the underwater listening equipment.
