I know that right after WWII in Germany there were
nice expensive pre-war radios in a few of the homes
I visited. These radios were superhets, but the
radios in the homes of the average German was a
regen. Most of these regens' architecture was to
place a series resonant LC ciruit between the plate
of the input stage and ground. The coil was wound
close coupled to the antenna winding and the main
tuning winding. The main tuning would be adjusted
so that the station was heard somewhat, then the
regen capacitor was brought up until the stage broke
into oscillation, then backed down a bit. Same
setup both middle wave and long wave. The first
radio I had was a "Seimens" followed by a "Blau Punkt".

The only time these regens would radiate was when
they were in oscillation, and the radio audio is not
useable then. So, if someone is really listening to
the radio, it ain't oscillating.

Maybe the sailors didn't bring them on ships. Of
course not. Or a golf bag full of boose.
