As far as can tell,(from photographs and personal histories I've seen)
diesel fleet subs used the RAL/RAK combo (two of each in Balao Class boats,
one of each in earlier boats) up through the war until they were
decommissioned in the 50's or 60's. I've never seen any evidence of
submarines that were upgraded to RBA/RBB/RBC. The reason for this has never
been clear to me-could be something about LO radiation, although the subs
also carried a RBO or similar superhet in the crew's mess.
Pictures I've seen of PT boats show the TCS as the only HF equipment, but
anything larger would have carried RAK/RAL until late in the war. Many
oilers/sub tenders and other support ships may never have been upgraded to
RBA/RBB/RBC.
I'd like to hear from anyone who actually used the RAK/RAL in service,
especially after the war.
Thanks and 73,
Robert
