Steel zippers???  I would have thought brass,
therefore non-rusting, but maybe the brass
was saved for ammo.

Wash with Woolite, the soap for wool???  Very
gentle stuff.

It seems that it's a rule that TBY carry packs have to be groaty dirty.
I just want to verify that you think the dry-clean route is no good
either, due to color change. Did your pack come out more an albino
than Marine green? I have held off on any kind of water washing
as i sure don't want to encourage the rusting of the zipper.

This topic makes me wonder how difficult it would be to learn how
to make these. Yes, canvas cutting, industrial sewing machine,
