Sorry, Marty.  My Army Air Corps training docs, ship and
aircraft radio logs
and flight charts are chock-full of the AAF using the YG system,
especially during "island hopping" in the PTO,
and also by the Navy and Merchant Marines
in Atlantic Convoy duty.  In the convoys, the
morse letter/compass bearings were issued at irregular
intervals and covered the entire convoy.
The maritime logs hint that the convoy ships used
the system as well as friendly aircraft.
Doesn't say on which ship the YG was installed,
but it's a good bet it was on the convoy commander's
flagship, which was often something
like a cruiser or light aircraft carrier.
