I started around '65/'66 and we never did anything like that either,
that I recall. I thought I read somewhere that they stopped it in the
mid/late '50s but I just don't know. I think John is a bit younger
than me, so if they were still doing it at his school, I feel left

We didn't have a lot around here in Vermont other than the Burlington
area where IBM, GE, General Dynamics and others resided over the
years. Chips, mini-guns and other cool stuff. We did have the SAC base
across the lake in Plattsburgh NY, though. When I was old enough to
understand and be frightened, I figured the Ruskies could use a
multi-megaton airburst right over Lake Champlain and easily take out
both locations. We had a couple of Atlas silos in NW Vermont and there
were a few over in NE NY, too. And a huge radar site in the northern
part of the state on East Mountain. Hmmm....we were a better target
than I realized!
Enjoying the thread too, especially hearing from those who were there
and took part in some way. Even as an observer of history.
