[Milsurplus] Restoration dilemma

Early on, I acquired 
an R-390/URR with a work-worn front panel.  Some of the most pronounced 
"eyebrows" over the tuning knobs I've ever seen, but readily 
re-finishable.

It is interesting to speculate about that model receiver with that wear pattern.  Most of those were racked up, set to a frequency, and remote controlled.  Frequency changed occasionally.  Yours was likely a search receiver (either that or used by a ham with long fingernails) in some obscure site somewhere.  Nowadays, the computer does the tuning of the tiny solid state box, so all the wear is on the Sun workstation trackball.
