[Milsurplus] photo, re observer, Japan bomber

I am looking at a cockpit photo taken inside a "Betty" bomber
( Attack Bomber 1 ). There is an observer standing looking thru
binocs. He has on what look like welder's gloves. That's not for
keeping warm, the crew are all in short sleeve shirts, the greenhouse
has LOTS of glass, and the sun is apparently bright. So are these
gloves for handling the M-G's if the observer has to run back to
the blister and man the guns?  I can also see about 1/8 of a 
radio bungee-corded to vertical and horizontal poles. No wonder
the Japanese preferred crystal control. -Hue Miller
