I have seen big companies, like ITT and Harris 'freak' out about all sorts of
silly things. I suspect the guys there are just told to do that to chase away
people who bought the stuff surplus and are looking for some information, rather
than looking to place a multi-megabuck order.

For example, I simply cannot get any information about a Harris frequency
hopping controller. OTOH, I have the thing sitting on a shelf and it uses
absolutely standard parts, including an 8085 micro with a 2764 EPROM. It would
take a few hours to trace the circuit and a few more hours to dump and
disassemble the code. I can even watch it run with a Tek disassembling logic
analyzer. At that point, I'd know just as much as the designers ever did about
the thing. Harris denies it ever even existed. Go figure. Why haven't I done
it? It's just not that interesting to me. OTOH, it typifies their attitude.
