Hallicrafters made a civilian S-37 to cover up around 240mc as Marty
mentions. It does look a bit different than the S-27/S-36 in that it
has a large German Silver-looking dial like the older rigs (Sky Buddy,
etc) in place of the main tuning escutcheon and backlit dial. Knobs
are slighlty different as well, thick/flat like those found on the
later portable set (Sky Ranger?) used by the military. S-27/36 have
knobs like SX-28*, including 'steering wheel' tuning knob. Otherwise
color, front panel, cabinet, and overall layout looks quite similar.
I've been hoping to find one of these in decent shape, always seem to
find the parts units or get there a day late/dollar short. Would like
the find the last model of the S-36 too, Navy desig. RBK-18. Gray
front panel, round, black dial escutcheon like S-27/S-36, but absent
any stamped model designation.
Interesting rigs, albeit very limited in coverage and utility. Heavy
beasties, too!
