Thanks Lloyd:  Your posting answers a lot of the questions posted.  The 
biggy is the liaison transmitter used the aircraft skin as an 
antenna.  Never thought about this but makes perfect sense. The whole skin 
of a B-17 would have great capture area as an antenna.
