Can I add to the discussion on this exact situation......no......

But.......as a Navy brat stationed at an NAS and serving in the Army, I can say that maint.
personal are famous for doing what it takes to keep their aircraft/vehicle/equip up and
running. Common for them to strip usable gear or easily repaired gear from scrap or wrecks.

While stationed in Korea, there was lots of obsolete equipment not used any where else in
the Army. The 'tech heads' would always be prowling through junk yards, surplus yards, ect.
looking for the parts to keep gear going.

It would not be hard to believe that a unit with a need for obsolete parts would strip a 30-
year old wreck if they needed the parts to keep in service gear going. Can take many years
to get the 'new' gear to all units...and some units never get it and keep using what they
have. I was in the last regular Army unit to still have gamma-goats and jeeps in their
inventory...nearly 3 years after every other unit had disposed of the goats.
