I had been using the same e-mail address for at least 20 years. After
all, I am in IT at work.
However, I had been getting as much as 350 SPAM a day, despite
using both a spam-filter offered by our local ISP, Postini, and adjusting
the spam filter which is built into Pegasus, my e-mail client of choice.
After doing some research, I changed my e-mail address to what it is
now about 2 years ago. In the process, I never sent a "...my new e-mail
address is..." type messages to anyone. I simply changed it to what it
was going to be on those few sites on the Internet where that was
important, like my Antivirus account, bank account, etc.
Then, and this is the most important step, I made CERTAIN that my
new e-mail address was not shown on any web site anywhere.
Within the first year, I received no spam whatever. This last year, I
receive one or two a week.
I also make it a point to never open any spam I receive to " just look at
it".
AFAIK, I've never received any spam due to the e-mail lists I am on.
Now we will see how long it lasts...
I heard that about a year ago, someone in New York tracked down a
spammer and shot him. Too bad that couldn't happen to all of them. We
even have one here in our small town of Moscow, Idaho. It is some
damned "college student" who drives a fancy car. BMW, I think.
Also, it turns out that 85 % of all e-mail traffic on the net is spam now.
Sheesh!
