The arc-109 is a great, reliable radio, but I would guess it to be worth
around 1/10 of what your delerious friend wants. Fair has like new ones for
$350. Problem is bonafide users need 25KHz spacing , the 109 is 50. I
utilize one for a groud to air radio, it is a version that has all of the
modules mounted in a 19" rack with a 60Hz AC power supply. Can't remember
the Collins model number for that one. Most 109's were made for 3 phase ac
power, with a power supply module swap, however they can be run from 28 VDC
(X suffix) The 109 is a relatively high power rig, about 30W is typical,
compared to 10 for most other airborne UHF gear. Beware the hybrid circuit
modules! They are diffucult at best to repair. The 109 was used in early
F-15, C-5A, and F-111's. Tghe C-5 installation used two AC powered units ,
and one DC powered unit, so you could have uniform without starting the APU.
All current military aircraft in the USAF use either the ARC-210, or
ARC-164, or a combination thereof. The 109 has been surplus in the US for
at least 20 years.
