[Milsurplus] SPAM using this list.

Group:

When you sign up for this (or any QTH) reflector, there is an obscure
option in there somewhere which allows you to surpress your address on
postings when they are sent to the digest, or at least when they are
collected by an outside search engine, I forget exactly. I missed this
the first time I signed up, and SPAM started shortly thereafter. I
dropped that address, and rejoined with a new address and checked the
appropriate box, and have been mostly SPAM free since. The possible
nightmare is for someone to join the list for the purpose of address
harvesting, and I don't know how the list administrator would defeat
that. Maybe Ralph would like to comment on the two above points?

One major community problem goes like this: Many of us have each other's
e-mail addresses in our address books (Duh!!) But, if any one of us
inadvertenly opens an attachment to a message with one of these current
worms, it will spray those addresses far and wide, often to a waiting
SPAMMER. I have been receiving notices from an ISP that they are
blocking worms to one of my very lightly used addresses from senders I
have never heard of, and an increasing crop of SPAM is also appearing on
that service. It is clear to me that one of my other correspondents has
admitted one of these worms which has broadcast my address from his
address book far and wide. Another nightmare. Sure wish they would let
us use these SPAMMERS and worm promulgators for target practice.

George
