Other examples of the flip side of the "P" designation are the AN/APN-4, -9,
and -70 sets. These are LORAN A MF (1.6 mc) navigation sets, not RADAR sets
as the nomencluture implies to some. I've always supposed that they were
assigned the APN nomenclature due to the pulsed nature of LORAN A, but still
I think an "ARN nomenclature would have been more accurate.
To the point of the original question, I'd suggest holding off chopping up
the set. Certainly it isn't common. I'm betting William Donzelli can best
provide particulars on the AN/ART-28.
