Hi,

Just joined the group. Excuse me taking up a lot of b/w with a first
posting!

I have a piece of WWII USN equipment here that I have been unable to locate
any info for, so it's time to ask the experts. The radio is a GWY-2A AM/MCW
TX made by Doolittle Radio Inc of Chicago in 1944. It also has a plate on
the top of the outer case reading "Radio Transmitter Navy Type GS-5,
Contract No 3259, Procurement Directive 14008-44, serial No 15".

It is quite a distinctive looking rig, with four identical Triplett meters
on the front panel. It's similar in size to a ARC series TX, maybe a little
larger, and is designed as a part of a modular system to plug into a
backplane. Inside it runs a 1625 final modulated by a pair of 6L6Gs with a
set of Thoradson transformers. Looking at the tank circuit I'd guess it runs
on a single frequency of about 7-12 Megs with a octal-based crystal
operating at one-quarter carrier freq. One quirk is the use of the same type
of coaxial connector for both antenna and microphone, but the type used is
unfamiliar to me.

I bought the rig this summer at a UK hamfest and found absolutley zilch on
the Net. I have discovered another mil collector locally (G4XWD) who has a
GWY-2A but again no info. An advert in the UK Vintage & Military Amateur
Radio Society newsletter produced a little more info, in that there were
originally six of these rigs in the possession of a UK collector but they
have been disposed of and he now has only one left, again no info. I have
enquired through the Electric Radio listed manuals dealers but they were
unable to help, Robert WA5CAB did post to this list but got no replies. I'm
hoping ER will run a "wanted" ad for me this month.

So, anyone recognise this rig? It's in very good condition and I'd like to
put it on the air. Photos available!
