I was working in Lynchburg (central) VA in 1960, and there was a *place*
a few miles down the road near the town of Brookneal. I wonder if anyone
else remembers that place? An old, leaning clapboard 2-story building on
the corner of the main highway and an obscure local road which was
apparently once a general store was the"office" Across the side street,
acres and acres of mil and commercial surplus. Ten cents a pound. Never
did find out where the stuff came from, although I can rule out where I
worked, GE Mobile Radio. There were a few old animal sheds on the
property where the *high value* stuff was stashed. HP and Tek gear, and
complete green radios. Picked up a few 4CX250Bs still in the mil metal
cans lying out in the mud. The remains of one of the X-Band nose cone
radars occupied the center of the field (as defined by the two wheel
trails the delivery trucks made) the whole time I was there. A rumor
would flash through the GE plant about new arrivals during the week, and
you would see all the hams from the plant out there that Saturday just
after sunrise. I was through that part of the country a few years ago,
and I could not even come close to figuring out where that place had
been, although I can still see it in my mind's eye.
