Older amateurs near Croydon (Surrey, England) may remember a surplus store
of the old school called "Huggets of Thornton Heath". This was a magical,
musty old shop in the later 1950s that was stacked high with kit like this.
I remember parts of H2S and Oboe on sale there, and it was a regular
Saturday afternoon pilgrimage to go there on the bus and rummage amongst
what we then regarded as old junk. The more technically adventurous bought
parts to convert into VHF television receivers, watching eerie BBC 405 line
transmissions in radar green. The shop itself was a veritable minefield for
the unwary, it being commonplace for heavy items such as transformers and
the odd foot to fall through the rotten floorboards. It is certain that
we shall never see its like again.
If only we had had the foresight to realise what effect 21st century
rarity would have on values!
