Good point, which I forgot to mention, was that the
crystals in the magic eye circuitry didn't have to
oscillate on their own as a good crystal is supposed
to be able to do.  Maybe rejects and faults could be
used.  (Crystals in the early radios I saw, BC-779,
etc, wouldn't work as an oscillator.  Some bad crystals
have to be driven by an outside source, and never are
able to develop enough power on their own to substain
oscillations.)
