Good question...Gordon White wrote the answer to this quite a while 
back.  It was for the ZB, and I have some photos of a B-29 on the web 
page showing the ZB antenna -

course, being the Signal Corps, they couldn't call it the ZB, so they 
relabled it the ARR-1.   :-)

It was only used in the Pacific theater, as far as I know.  The YGs were 
set up on islands like Tinian, Guam, etc. to provide an alternative to 
conventional navigation receivers.  Just insurance.
