I'll second the saving of the plates. And if I might add, the main tuning
knob as well. I have an RAB-2 (the HF brother of the RAA), and I suspect
that the original tuning knob has been replaced (the current knob just
doesn't look RCA).
It would be a shame to see this receiver scrapped. The RAA/RAB pair was
the backbone of Navy communications for most of the 1930s, and some were
even in front line service during World War 2. Because of their weight,
very few were saved - I know of 3 each surviving RAAs and RABs (I think
battleship Texas still has an original RAA). The RAA in peril is one of
the survivors.
Honestly, I would drive 800 miles each way to get an RAA...but 800 miles
just gets me to Chicago.
