This is about as fine in article in this genre as i have ever seen.
I would, however, take slight issue with the descriptive "boring" being used for
the BC-1000. While the odd frequency range meant they never caught on with
civilians, one has to admit, this is one of the best looking and intelligently
turned out radios ever. Just look at those beautifully sized and placed knobs and
dials, the rounded sides of the control cover, and the large smooth expanse of OD
of the battery box, and the man-size fullness when wearing it.
Now, as to the issue of the deletion of the squelch in some UK models: possible
reason #2, squelch tail so loud enemy might overhear, i say complete nonsense. I
believe if that was a problem, a diode clipper-limiter, even a single or 2-stack selenium, at
the right point in the circuit, would have done the trick. I suggest the continuous rushing
sound of the no-squelch model was an elementary operational status feedback. Thus, if
your battery precipitously dropped off during extended periods of silence, such as
infiltrating, this would not catch one unawares.
This VMARS sounds like a pretty together outfit, i will have to look into that some.
I'd also add that if the conversion covers approx 49 MHz, then the set could be used on
this "high CB" band to work to the current crop of CB talkies, which in its upper end
includes superhet - FM sets in this frequency range.
