GA, Dave,
Sure, I'm kidding :-) You just have to know that once I open the
thing up it is going to look unbelievable inside. I', just trying to
start with SOME hope, after all it is Memorial Day, and all I did was
give it a kind of cursory inspection, and actually was stupid enough to
put the thing on a variac without actually looking inside, I just got
it so late in the afternoon that I figured I would do the variac thing
without the use of my TV-7, all kind of resistance measurements, and
the magnifying lamp and loupe. Heck, I didn't even hook it up to the
URM25D for a realistic sensitivity check, just stuck an antenna on the
sucker and checked for a few NDB's, the SITOR on 518, and then tuned
around for signals, using a good 600 ohm headset, then turned the whole
shebang off, and left it on the bench after making a few notes.......
Don't worry, I hold no optimiistic hopes for "extensive mods, lack
of:"..... I fully expect that major rebuilds/ restoring will be
necessary :-) I just got the darn thing at such a great price that at
least, that alone, while should be filling me with abject fear, kind of
made me somewhat pleased..
Don't worry, willl be keeping the reflector amused with the travails
and the highly sanitized version of my screamed epithets. I hold no
optimism, for since I also am a greenkey fanatic, know what evils lurk
in the heart of those mechanical evil beings :-) One starts thinking
"Gee, I need a keytop for the "N" and 36,500 parts later, am happy to
escape with so much luck, (M14/15) or "all I need is a new belt for the
typing reperf drive", and after banging ones head against the shack
walls (concrete) because you have run into a search for pure unobtanium,
and multiple pieces of pure unobtainum at that, you realise that it will
take "just a little more than one expected :-).
OK, I'm Kidding, and the reflector will be hearing the gnashing of teeth
and the wailing--hi-- however, we will prevail in the end, and another
BC-348Q will once again, recieve it's signals in pristine glory and
fantastic sensitivity.
