GA All,
Having recently acquired a decent 348Q I find a need a few parts, and
this first query is off the top of my head, because I haven't really
opened it up and made all the thorough checks, but since it works, and
passes the smoke test with the variac, I have no reason to believe any
extensive mods were done except for a few minor ones...
Ok... I need both a RH and LH front panel pull out handle, or at least
the info as to the composition of said handles as, since they are
painted, I don't want to go ahead and make any assumptions, Are they
steel? weldable/brazable? if so, I don't need the handles, I can just
repair them.
2. I need the "OFF, AGC, MGC switch, mount and exterior handle, as the
opening previously occupied by same is now occupied by a green pilot
lamp, to show that the internal power supply is energized.
3. I need both of the front Headphone/Tel jacks, along with the spring
loaded covers.
4. I need the original, or reasonable facsimile thereof, front panel
antenna and ground connector, those having been replaced by a coax
connector on the rear panel of the unit. I may keep both the original
ant/ground and the coax input, since the coax input is hidden, doesn't
stand out as a huge mod, and might be conveninient at times.......
6 I will keep the reflector advised of any other "mods" I wish to
remove, including some sort of on/off switch and volume control which
occupies one of the aforementioned "Tel" jack positions.
OK, the unit works, passed the smoke test (yup I was stupid, and just
put the variac to it, and haven't opened the whole unit up and gone over
same with the fine tooth comb and the MK1 eyeball, but it works on all
bands with reasonable sensitivity... OPNOTE I didn't really run a full
up sensitivity test with the gud old AN/URM-25D simply because of time
and realize that I should have really opened the unit up before
powering, but I took the shot, and came out ok.....--hi--///
The only ohter modification is a Ma DC meter, very neatly installed, on
the upper right front, which works as an "S" meter, and I may or may not
remove same, as the install is professional looking, and it does have
certain conveniences.
If anyone has a set of shock mounts for this unit, I would be greatly
appreciated, and will pass along the serial and contract number (it's
Wells-Gardner ) for the records of the group who keep track of who owns
what., the next time I go down to the shack and read the ID plate. (I
feel lazy right now)
I do have the CD manuals, but since this is my first :"happy rebuild
outing" with a BC-348Q although I have rebuilt many other same sort of
vintage rcvrs, any input from the group will be more than mildly
appreciated, for reinventing the wheel is sometimes a great time waster
(think of the first time one rebuilds an R390, or an R392, or a Collins
618T, even if you had done it many years before in the military, and the
old organic computer tends to lose the address of the hints and kinks
one knew so easily before).......
Anyhow, let me know any info which may be of help, don't think because I
have spent almost 40 yrs doing this type of stuff, , and am an aerospace
electronics engineer./comml pilot (retired disabled, (service connected)
no more corporate politcs--hi) that I don't need to know something.
What gud info can be passed on often saves hours of beating one's head
against the shack walls.
Again, 73 es tnx
