That's not a bad idea - take along your ham license or copy - also maybe some 
magazine article showing classic mil gear or even some photos of the event 
you attended.
I can almost sympathize with the border people (if they were maybe a bit less
rude)  because this kind of gear is pretty much a mystery to 99.9% of the 
population.
