According to TM 11-5092/TO 16-35R394-5, the R-394 was
used in at least six radio set configurations:

AN/FRR-36
 R-394/U
 PP-846/U
 CY-1150/U cabinet
 AC powered

AN/VRR-7
 similar to AN/FRR-36
 PP-847/U
except unit has DC power supply

AN/VRC-19
 R-394/U and T-278/U
 CY-938/VRC cabinet
 C-847/U Control set
DC powered - RF power about 25 watts

AN/FRC-27
 R-394
 T-416/GR
 C-844/U Local control
 C-845/U Remote control
 CY-122/G cabinet
AC powered - RF power about 45 watts

AN/TRC-28
Similar to AN/FRC-27 except for the
addition of AM-494/GR and it’s power supply, PP-638/U
AC powered - RF power about 250 watts

AN/TRC-34
Similar to AN/FRC-27, except base stand MT-1176/FR is
 not part of this set.

I believe the VRC-19, FRC-27. TRC-28 and the TRC-34
could also handle a second R-394 receiver.

I've got one of these units that I had on the Richmond County, GA,
Sheriff's office, back in the late 1960s. Still have the unit, but
I have no idea where the home brew remote head is, because
that also has the connector.
