There is photographic of them with the BC-611,
 not to mention the BC-721 in the gliders.
Remember that we're talking about people standing on cliffs talking
across a relatively short expanse of salt water; I think it could have
worked fine, given a QRM-less environment.  Somewhere in a dusty
library is a document showing the communication plan for D-Day.
We'll find it one day and put all this to rest.
