Jack,

I remember seeing tie wraps for the first time in the late 50s.  The first versions required a special tool to pull them tight, rotate the pigtail 90 degrees to lock the strap and then snip off the excess.  Was working on ground equipment at the time so can't tell you about aircraft use.  We also used a lot of "Cradle Clips," a saddle shaped piece of plastic with a mounting post that used a rubber band like retainer to hold bundles of wires in place.
