I think the gap prevents early saturation of the core, keeping 
the inductance from decreasing quickly by limiting the increase 
of the magnetic field in the iron.

If there were no gap, the field would be freer to increase faster 
with current, because the magnetic circuit would be unbroken. I 
could be wrong but I think I read it right.
