Back 45 years ago when we were getting VHF-FM established (52.525 on 6M),
the only way to insure catching openings was to get a few ratchet jaws on
the channel in every populated area we could. Small local groups to keep
the frequency busy. Back then, I worked 20 or 25 states using an old
"lunch-box" GE portable with 1 watt output and a loaded whip. There were
a couple of really good base stations on, like one at the Indiana State
Police HQ. who were first and last heard during openings. I managed to
work a couple of double hop Sporadic E contacts back in the 60s when I
had time to be active.
