"Sferics" was short for "Atmospherics". It was
a LF/MF wide-band omni-directional receiver which
was intended to pick up the QRN generated by
lightning flashes. The idea was to have these
monitoring stations located around and inside the
Pacific rim. Their audio was connected to a
central point where the timing of the lightning
could be used to determine the location of the
thunder storm. It never worked because of
problems with the relative delay in the receivers
and in the unstable transmission systems. Time
frame was 1962.
There's a high power station in Alaska that uses
vertical shots to study various things way
up there.
