[Milsurplus] military unit designations

I'm looking for a list of military unit numbers versus activity. For example, the 82nd and 101st Airborne, the (fictional) 4077th MASH. The main interest is WWII era units. 

1. We're especially interested in units that did radio (and high level electronics/avionics) maintenance/repair, etc.
2. We'd like to know unit numbers that didn't get used (Like 4077th example above).
A Google search didn't turn up much...

This is for a museum event in June, I will be posting additional info. and requests for help in a few days.
