Yes- you interpreted it right - but the still unresolved question, apparently,
is why the aircraft had LF transmit capability, since it did not contact the 
field on LF.

I was thinking about why the airfield, i specify military overseas airfield, as 
opposed to USA home civilian airfields, where you had small craft with maybe
only a beacon receiver on board for their total avionics, i mean why the military
fields used LF. I would have to guess it was to limit range, as the field transmitters,
at least in the USA, used powers of like 10-30 watts on LF. Of course the military
airfields for non-local work could also work on HF, voice and cw.
