I just received this informatio from a real expert:

John,

as far as I can trace (with reference to Working Instructions ZB11761 for
Charging Set Lightweight 80 Watt) this set was first issued in 1944 as a 12V
charging set for use with paratroops, airborne forces, jungle, arctic and
mountain warfare. The set has an alternator and full bridge metal rectifier.
It can deliver 18V at 4.5A.
The set on e-bay is probably missing the tubular guard frame and canvas
cover and what about flexible exhaust pipe and silencer?
