My newly found BC-348J came with a DM-24-B dyno. The 12V conversion
process has been completed. WHile all tubes are the 6V series anyway, i
was surprised that this one had 6AC7 tubes in place of the 6SK7 RF amps
,1st and 2nd IF. No wiring nor component changes had been done as the
unit is like brand new. I put 6SK7's back in after changing the
filaments around but didn't notice any difference including comparing it
with my 348Q which is a 28V Dyno model. Anyone else have that change?
Is there any advantage to leaving the 6AC7 tubes in? I have no
intention of making and major mods. This thing worked well as originally
put together and i'm not looking for a high performance radio to compete
with an SP-600/R-390(A) etc. Just curious as to the difference in tubes
when it's basically the same radio as the "Q". Not even the book on the
J-N-Q which btw in my case only shows the wiring and schematic for the
"J" model, indicates the 6AC7.
I did find in my archives (stacks of paper) articles written by Bob,
K9EUI back in 96 concerning his noise and sensitivity tests he did along
with some conversions. Did mentions some changes there but again
nothing along the 6AC7 line.
fun project and the radio runs well from a 35A MFJ supply. Even starts
the Dyno without any grunts. Something one of my other 25 amp supplies
wouldn't do.
Any input from anyone one this?
On another note, how many folks would want to change their 348 with HB
ac supply back to dynamotor? How many need parts? I've got a lead on
some 348's, partially crunched but lots of good parts including the
dynamotors, knobs, etc. etc. Don't know where this will lead but i need
to know if it's worth pursuing. there might be 6 or so of them on the
shelf. No mounts that i've heard of.
