I, and several others in Missoula, MT, got ARC-1s through ArmyMARS
back in the 1960s. Several of us converted them for 12.6 volt filaments
(amounts to a few jumpers in various places), and used them regularly.
I mounted the power transformer for mine in the dynamotor well, as it
didn't come with a dyno.
I always wanted to use the autotune, but never did.
As I remember it, once we got them working, we had no further trouble
at all with them. But, then again, we weren't operating them in a loud,
vibrating, low pressure, "low-temperature environmental test chamber"
(read, refrigerator), either.
