Right, the producers don't really have anyone handy & don't know how
long a search would take - IF they care. I saw somewhere a  mention of
some WW2 radio gear that came from a movie studio - so at least sometimes,
somewhere in the past, it was easiest for the studio just to pull some likely
looking candidates out of the closet and stick them in the scene.
