Ken, Bob, et al,

The BC-348-B came from the BC-224-A when the Air Corps began converting to
all 28VDC aircraft electrical systems. The BC-312/14/42/44 family were designed
at Ft. Monmouth to fill a need for a ground based set for fixed and vehicular
use. As most of the vehicles that the BC-312 (and BC-314) were intended for
use in had 12 volt systems, it was only later in the war that they came out
with a 24 volt variant. Other than in a very general sort of way (design
practices and attitudes of the era), I've never heard of there being any particular
connection between the development of the BC-224/348 and the other four.
