You have to remember this is a two-way street.
I don't hear too many Japanese folks complaining about
the great outflux from their country of culturally
important Samurai swords and other Samurai artifacts
or Germans complaining about the great outflux of WW1
& WW2 Militaria items from Germany.
If you feel strongly about keeping an item in the US
because of its historical value, the best thing to do
is to donate to a museum where many people can enjoy
it as well.
Selling it to another US buyer is no guarantee that he
(or she) will not sell outside the US at a future
date.
I think exporting some of this stuff is a much better
fate, that having a ham's widow toss it
indiscriminately into a dumpster at a future date.
