I wasn't going to get an oar in on this subject but there doesn't seem to be 
a definitive answer regarding round versus flat lacing cord.  

If you check your ARRL handbooks for a long period of time you will see 
illustrated the correct and incorrect way to lace cables.  The lacing cord shown is 
round.  I don't remember when or if they stopped showing the round cord or if 
they did what year.   

I can say from personal experience that we used the round lacing cord in TV 
stations into the 1970s and it was readily available at electronics parts 
houses.  Seems to me the flat lacing cable was nylon and was used mostly by the 
military and for NASA space projects for a number of years before becoming 
commonly used elsewhere.
