Al, in the N3NNG photos, what's just to the left of the
GP?
Also, the "thing from the wooden box" with the wings
or whatever painted around the dials, what is that?

Whence comes the info that the TR-9 was a spare unit
for embassies? Seems rather low power for it to be of
much use for their traffic?
I dunno anything about its actual deployment, but i
think of the TR-9 as Hallicrafters'  "solidstate GRC-9",
since the frequency range is precisely identical, and 
the power nearly identical. Maybe it was intended to
be marketed to that market, except that SSB put an end
to HF AM shortly.
