Hi,
Any scholars of Japanese Morse Keys on the list? Someone in my local
antique radio club found one at a yard sale and wants to identify it.

Subject: [Milsurplus] WW2 sunspot cycle
Group:
There is no need to speculate, guess, estimate and be completely wrong
about the sunspot cycle peak, it was 1947. In spite of the many
confirmed examples of long distance HF propagation during the latter war
years, the running sunspot number varied from a low of 8 in Jan. 1944 to
39 in Aug. 1945. Cycle 18 peaked at 152 in May and June 1947, and
remained above 130 until Aug. 1949. They sure don't make 'em like that
anymore.
The decline of cycle #17 in Dec. 1941 put that month's count at 48 and
dropping, a number which it did not reach again until August, 1945. So,
the count was below 50 for the whole war period. The monthly sunspot
number for 1749 through 1993 can be found on pages 2-14 to 2-18 of "The
New Shortwave Propagation Handbook" by Jacobs, Cohen and Rose; CQ
Communications, 1995.
Much of the anecdotal propagation information has undoubtedly been
embellished with the passage of 60 years, so it is difficult to separate
the fact from fiction. However, there always was sporadic E, as well as
the as then unnamed transequatorial ducting. Having no QRM helped, also.
A lot.

Subject: [Milsurplus] BC-1335 Info or picture
Hi All,
My son bought a BC-1335 at a small hamfest on Saturday and told me he's
going to make it a Thanksgiving (early Christmas) present to me. It
appears to be complete and if modified, only very little. Even has the
spare tubes and vibrator. However it does not have any covers on the top
and bottom. I'm going to order an SCR-619 manual copy from W7FG but we're
both impatient and wondering what the covers look like and have not been
able to find any pictures on the web. This looks like a very interesting
set and I'd like to get it working someday.
Does anybody have any pictures of a complete BC-1335 and/or have any
experience operating one?
Thanks and 73,
Clare Owens N2RJB

Greeting's All,
Well the Hamfest was not rained out, and the turn out was good. For
those of you who made it and stopped by THANK YOU. I had two show up with
the e-mail printed out and they got their FREE gift, two showed but
forgot the e-mail, but I give them a deep discount. To all thank you. The
XYL's car is now tucked away in the garage and peace has been restored.
I will be attending the D.V.R.A. Hamfest in Trenton NJ this Sunday,
and
I have a lot of stuff to move out. So here is a small list of what's on
my trailer.

There's a schematic at:
http://www.fernblatt.net/sch/bc-1335.gif
Unfortunately this file is not .pdf format, so that limits its
usefulness and ease of printout.

I have no pictures.
I used one 32 years ago to copy my local Sheriff Department on 37.1
mcs. I just happened to have the correct channel 371 crystal unit.
I somehow suddenly lost the filaments in several tubes one day. Never
figured out what happened, but at least there were spares in the box.
The main oddity of the unit, to me, is that it has no squelch. Even
the BC-1000 had squelch, so I don't know what the thought was with the
BC-1335. It has a built-in alignment indicator (magic eye tube), and
the upper cover contained a schematic and alignment instructions,
plus a small cage to contain about 12 crystals. Normally 120 crystals
were stored in a CS-137 crystal case to cover 27.0 to 38.9 mcs in
0.1 mcs increments. The transmitter is rated for about 4 watts out,
IIRC, and you can use the standard T-17 carbon mike. I don't know
how legal this wideband FM unit would be today on ten meters.
I fed mine 12 vdc. Most BC-1335s were modified to add another power
connector in the upper right part of the front, to allow connection to
a BA-70 battery (same as used for the BC-1000) for portable use. I
have one with, and one without, this mod.
I have a manual for Aircraft Radio Corporation Type 12 equipment
(LF/MF receiver, VHF receiver and transmitter) which shows an
interconnection to the SCR-619. I've read of installations in light
military aircraft (Stinsons, Moodys) of the SCR-619. Yet, I've still
got to wonder about having to listen to an un-squelched FM SCR-619 along
with other aircraft communications gear feeding into the interphone
system.
The BC-1335 is a cleaver little all-in-one Delco unit. I seem to
recall in some configuration it had a "JAN" designation. If only
it had squelch!
It may be difficult to find the covers you are missing.

Mike / KK5F

You could also look for a manual for the AN/ARC-59, which
was the military name for the 18S-4. The RT unit designation
was RT-380/AR.

I think the TBS started seeing service in 1939. I have a large stack of
TBS Control Unit datatags, from TBS thru TBS-8 (anyone need some?), and
the original contract looks like 1938.

There are a few interesting codes. I once saw a Navy oil can, to be used
with the TBW generator, called CAN-18003. CAN being Sangamo, the people
that made the thing.
The Navy wised up - I don't think CASE is used.

Never saw a GE TDE. Most are Westinghouse, a few are Farnsworth.
That is kind of a neat book.
