[Milsurplus] Toggle switch conventions

Not in US gear, though. It's a British thing. All my British radios (and
Australian) have toggle switches with Off up and On down.

I have noticed that some WW II gear has its toggle switches installed such

when the handle points down, the function is on. (WS 19 and R.1155 for
example).
Does anyone know the origin of this? Is it a Brit convention? How long has
the
convention persisted? It just seems very odd to me.
