Ken,

Matching paint color and finish can be a very difficult thing. It all 
depends on how fanatical one wishes to get about it. As you've 
observed, time can alter a paint's color by oxidation and perhaps 
other chemical processes.

John Jewkes' reply goes to show that a well-stocked hobby shop can be 
a great asset. Besides Testor's paints, there is also a brand called 
Tamiya that offers a broad range of colors geared toward military 
modeling. They have several shades of gray to choose from.

I generally prefer to leave the paint as original as possible because:
1) I prefer an authentic time-worn look (within reason!).
2) It gets expensive to do a major paint job *right*.
3) It's less work to simply leave a piece as-is. Allows more time to 
work on other gear!  ;-)
